Before Almighty God, the great judge of all before who I am about to appear, I do hereby solemnly swear that I did not take the life of Mr. Homer T. Hatch on purpose. It was done in the defense of Mr. Helton. I did not aim to hit him with the ax but only to keep him off Mr. Helton. He aimed a blow at Mr. Helton who was not looking for it. It was my belief at the time that Mr. Hatch would of taken the life of Mr. Helton if I did not interfere if I had been in Mr. Helton's place he would of done the same thing for me. I still think I done the only thing there was to do. My wife - [ ] it was Mr. Homer T. Hatch who came to do wrong to a harmless man. He caused all this trouble and he deserved to die. But I am sorry it was me who had to kill him.
This ending suicide note from Mr. Thompson ultimately sums up his character. In the opening of the story we are introduced to a proud but slothful Mr. Thompson whose life is going steadily downhill. His farm is rundown, his once beautiful wife is sick, and he is constantly worrying that his boys will grow up to be worthless.
Thompson is a man of severely limited vision. His view of himself is determined by how others perceive him, and his notion of how life should be lived is defined by static roles; " Slopping hogs was hired man's work, [ ] Killing hogs was a job for the boss, but scraping them and cutting them up was for the hired man again"(233). In a sense, everybody around him served some purpose of making him look better to others.
Things start to look up a bit for Mr. Thompson when Mr. Helton, hired work, comes into his life. Mr. Helton is a very hard worker and soon has the farm looking and running better then ever. Mr. Thompson is now able to pride himself not only on being a landowner, but a well-run farm at that. Thompson is content with how things are going, but then a stranger, Mr. Homer T. Hatch, comes into his life and creates quite a dilemma for Mr.
